Changing the Spam Filter in Hotmail/Outlook.com

First of all you need to set the filtering level of the messages i.e. setup your spam e-mail filter in Outlook.com.

Sign in to the Outlook.com with your Miscrosoft account. You need to click on Gear icon and choose More mail settings options. Under Preventing junk email, click Filters and reporting and select the options you want. Don’t forget to click Save. 

 If you choose Exclusive for your junk e-mail filter, only messages from e-mail addresses on your Contacts or Allowed senders lists appear in your Inbox. Messages from senders not on those lists are automatically sent to the Junk e-mail folder. Check occassionally your Junk mail folder, to see whether any wanted mail ended there by accident. 

Messages from senders not on your Contacts or Safe senders lists will be sent to the Junk folder. By default, the Junk folder will automatically delete messages after 10 days.

This is more convenient as you don’t have any control if spammers are randomly changing their address.

Aside from setting filtering level of your spam e-mail filter, you could also create rules on your email account to stop spam emails

Follow the same steps as for setting the filter. You need to sign into your account. From the Mail Page, find again Gear icon on the upper right corner and click on it. Choose More Email settings under Customizing Outlook, click on Rules for sorting new messages.

You can now create rules of your choice under Rules for sorting new messages. 

Also, you need to add a contact to your contact list to ensure that it would not be filtered as spam to your account.

Might be a good idea to use the Sweep function too. Go to your Inbox folder, locate the email then click the check box beside it and right above your Inboxthere is  Sweep dropdown arrow. Choose the option Delete all of them and click Delete all. You can check the box for Also block future messages to block all the messages from that sender.

For minimizing junk mail in Outlook.com, you can also specify names or domain in your blocked senders list by following the below steps:

1. Sign in to Outlook.com.

2. In the upper-right corner of the page, click the Cog icon, and then click on More mail settings.

3. Under Preventing junk mail, click Safe and blocked senders.

4. Under the Safe and blocked senders, click on Blocked senders.

5. In the Blocked senders list, add the name or domain (the part of an e-mail address that follows the @ sign, such as outlook.com) that you don’t want to receive mail from, and then click Add to list.

Play with various filter levels to see with suits you the best. Filter levels range range from “Low – obvious junk e-mail is sent to the junk e-mail folder” to “Exclusive – everything is sent to the junk e-mail folder except messages from your contacts and safe senders, Windows Live Hotmail service announcements, and alerts that you signed up for.
