Homemade Hand Sanitizer: Everything You Need To Know!

Homemade Hand Sanitizer

No matter where you live, you have probably felt influence of corona-virus (COVID-19) pandemic. We are witnessing panic buys on a massive scale, people are stockpiling goods like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, canned foods etc. This in turn leave most of us without essential items we need for a normal life. I can say from my own experience that this is terrible feeling that leaves you frustrated, so I decided to take action and made my own homemade hand sanitizer.

Just the other day I have felt on my own skin just how much this pandemic affects me as an individual. I was in a local store, buying only the essential goods for my household like sugar, soap, toilet paper etc. when I noticed that shelf with hand sanitizer was completely empty.

Now since you don’t have tap water everywhere you go, and you need to keep  your hands clean, I really consider this an item you should always have with you. Since there was no way I could buy it in a foreseeable future it made me think: What if I could make my own homemade hand sanitizer?

So I did some research and found out, to my surprise, it was actually really easy to make!

What I discovered is you don’t need some fancy ingredients that are hard to get. In fact all you need is rubbing alcohol, Aloe Vera gel, and essential oils. The essential oils are optional as they serve only to add fragrance to your homemade sanitizer.

Lets take a look what you need to do to make your own hand sanitizier:

How does hand sanitizer works?

In absence of water, hand sanitizer is super helpful, since it can quickly reduce number of microbes on your hands. It can also eliminate most of the disease-causing pathogens on your hands, including the new sort of corona-virus SARS-CoV-2. However, you should be aware that even the best hand sanitizers can not eliminate all types of germs.

What do I need to make it?

  • Bowl and spoon
  • Bottle with pump dispenser
  • Funnel

Where can I buy these ingredients?

I bought all of this on Amazon, since I couldn’t find them in my local store. Even Amazon has reduced certain products shipping to certain areas and countries because demand is to high. I would recommend these products since I tried them and they have worked wonders for me.

So if you don’t have these ingredients at home or you can’t buy them in local store, here are the links on Amazon where you can buy them:

What if I only have 70% alcohol?

Alcohol concentration in hand sanitizer should not be less than 60% as recommended by the CDC, therefore if you only have 70% alcohol there is very little you can add to it, since it will dilute the alcohol and his concentration will fell below recommended 60%. You can add a few drops of essential oil to improve texture and scent.

Steps to make hand your own hand sanitizer:

1. Check and measure your ingredients

Make sure you have your rubbing alcohol, Aloe Vera gel, and optional essential oils ready and properly measured out.

2. Mix Your Ingredients

Ok, after you measured ingredients now pour them all into the bowl and mix thoroughly with a spoon.

3. Pour the mixed content into your bottle.

With the help of the funnel, carefully pour mixed content into the bottle of your choice, then screw the top of the bottle on tight and label it “hand sanitizer.” Now you have your homemade hand sanitizer and you can start using it immediately.

What is very important to know is that you don’t use methyl alcohol (methanol) in your homemade hand sanitazer, since it is a very poisonous alcohol that can cause blindness, kidney damage etc. if consumed orally by accident.
